GEOGRAPHICAL INDICATIONS

Geographical indications are distinctive signs that identify products or services as coming from a particular territory, country or region. This is due to the identification of intrinsic characteristics that distinguish the product or service from others based on the specifics of the indicated geographical environment.

In Brazil, there are two forms of registration: the indication of source and the apellation of origin. The main difference between them is that the former associates the geographical name with the locality that has become known as the center of extraction, production or manufacture. The latter concerns the qualities of the product or service as shaped by the geographical environment, whether by natural or human factors.
